I think the only way you can really rate something is by knowing it note for note. Which is why I always say I need a good 3-5 listens (depends on the song, el paso = not that many, long spacey other ones = probably double digit listenings) before I can judge how good I think version X is. I think we can tell when something is really good, especially after we get to know it. But comparing this with that can really only be done by getting to everything. One listen per version and then comparing is quite worthless. Though when it comes to Euro72 I think its a good idea as the sound is quite consistent and for the most part there ARE top versions, it just gets harder when speaking of TOOs and Dark stars. El paso, MAMU etc, i think you can get more definitive.
